Optical shops in Australia

633 independent shops and optometrists across 437 areas, compiled from public sources. The coverage is wide and thin — most areas hold only one or two shops, which is exactly why browsing by hand beats trusting a map pin.

Australia questions

Finding a shop near you

How coverage works across a very spread-out country, and what to ask before you book.

Because Australia's independents are spread out. 633 shops across 437 areas means plenty of suburbs have one or two, and it also means the nearest optician to a lot of people is an independent rather than a chain.

Both are public records for each shop, collected when the listing was compiled. We don't write them, and we don't leave out the ones that read badly.

Three things: is the test free with a purchase or charged separately, does it include an eye-health check or only a prescription, and what does the test cost on its own if you buy your glasses elsewhere.

No. There is no advertising tier and no sponsored placement. Listings are compiled from public sources, and position in a list is not for sale.

Before you book

What should an eye test cost here?

A Medicare-covered test changes the maths, and a shop's quoted price tells you what it's actually selling. The guide sets out the real bands and the three questions to ask before you ring around.
